- Marathon, Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- January in Culiacán is the coolest time of year and still warm, with average highs around 28 °C and lows around 13 °C. The 6:30 a.m. start comes before sunrise (about 6:55 a.m.), so the first hours are the most comfortable, but temperatures climb through the morning for marathoners still on course. Rain is rare, with only about a 7% chance of a wet day, and winds are usually light from the north. Start conservatively and keep drinking as the sun rises.
What to train for
Because the marathon is two laps of the half course, you will know exactly what the second half looks like, so practise even pacing and a negative split mindset in your long runs.
Build long runs to 30 to 35 km for the marathon (or 16 to 19 km for the half) and include tempo work at goal pace.
If you are coming from a northern winter, add some runs in warm conditions late in the build, since Culiacán warms up quickly once the sun is up. Train with the drinks and gels you plan to use so race-morning fuelling feels routine.
