Course
The Hanover Marathon course
Start and finish are on the Friedrichswall, right by the Neues Rathaus, with the marathon going off in waves from 10:00. Within 2 km you are running beside the Maschsee, and the route then makes one big tour of the city, past the Zoo around km 14.5 and into the Eilenriede, one of Europe's largest city forests.

It then swings north through List towards the Lister Turm and back into the centre. The organisers state just 19 m of height difference over the whole course, one of the flattest marathons in Germany, and every route is officially measured for record lists.

- 10K, Half marathon, Marathon
- Field
- About 34,000 runners across all races in 2026
- Weather on race day
- Mid-April in Hanover is usually 4–15 °C, so expect a cool morning start that warms through the race. Spring showers and a fresh breeze are common, which makes an even pace and a light layer for the start more useful than extra fluids.
What to train for
On a course with 19 m of elevation change, nothing breaks your rhythm, so your preparation should centre on long, steady running at goal pace.
Build long runs to 32–35 km with progressively longer goal-pace blocks (for example 3 x 5 km at marathon pace within a 28 km run).
Because the race falls in early April, most of your build happens in winter: get the long runs done on cold, dark weekends and keep one treadmill or track option for icy days. The 16:00 finish cut-off (about 8:20 per km) leaves comfortable room for first-time marathoners.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Hanover Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 11, 2027, your taper starts around March 24, 2027.
