    Course

    The Florence Half Marathon course

The 43rd Half Marathon Firenze runs on Sunday, April 4, 2027, starting at 9:00 a.m. on the Lungarno della Zecca (near Via delle Casine) and finishing in Piazza Santa Croce. The 21.097 km course is two laps through the historic streets and monuments of medieval Florence, closed to traffic, flat and surfaced with asphalt and stone paving; the organizers warn that the stone is uneven in places, so watch your footing.

There are four water and food stations on the course plus a final one at the finish, and the time limit is 3 hours. The field is capped at 5,000 for the half and 1,000 for the non-competitive 10 km, which starts in its own grid at the same time, and in 2025 about 6,000 athletes from 82 nations took part.

    Weather on race day
Early April in Florence is spring weather, with average highs around 17 °C and lows around 7 °C at the start of the month. There is about a 27% chance of a wet day, and winds are light, around 12 km/h, mostly from the south. A 9:00 a.m. start usually means cool, comfortable running, so wear a throwaway layer before the start and be extra careful on the stone paving if it has rained.

    What to train for

A flat two-lap course is made for even pacing, so build tempo runs of 6 to 10 km at goal half marathon pace and practice running the second half as fast as the first.

Since parts of the route are on stone paving, include some runs on uneven surfaces or cobbles to strengthen ankles and train quick, light steps.

Long runs of 16 to 20 km will make the distance feel familiar, and the 3-hour limit leaves room for anyone stepping up to their first half. Arrive early: a group warm-up session with coach Fulvio Massini starts in Piazza Santa Croce at 8:15 a.m.

    Taper

Tapering for the Florence Half Marathon

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 4, 2027, your taper starts around March 23, 2027.
