The Gasparilla Distance Classic course

A multi-race weekend run as an out-and-back along Bayshore Boulevard, one of the flattest and most scenic stretches of waterfront road racing in the country. Runners can combine distances across the two days, which is the event's signature, and the weekend covers a 15K, a half marathon, an 8K, and a 5K. There is no marathon, and no hills to speak of anywhere on any of the courses.

Weather on race day

Late February in Tampa is mild and often humid: starts in the 50s or 60s, warming quickly. It is far more comfortable than a Florida summer but still warmer than most visiting runners are trained for.

What to train for

Speed rather than endurance, and humidity tolerance. On a pancake-flat course the limiter is threshold fitness, so tempo runs and cruise intervals are the sessions that matter. If you are combining distances across the weekend, plan the first race as a controlled effort rather than an all-out one.
