Course
The Gaelforce 10K Howth course
The race starts in a field beside the Deer Park Golf Club and finishes there too, on the Howth peninsula at the northern edge of Dublin Bay. The route climbs Ben of Howth straight away on a narrow, steep track, then switches to sealed road near the top and joins the old railway greenway.
Read the full course notes
At the end of the greenway you climb Ben of Howth a second time, now to the summit, before following the trail back down to the finish at Deer Park. Expect a mix of road, wet bog, forest trail and gravel path, with two real climbs and a fast descent to close. It is one of the three races in the Gaelforce 10K trilogy, alongside Bray and Wicklow.

- Weather on race day
- Early October on the Howth peninsula is usually cool, around 8–14 °C, and often breezy, with showers likely and the summit exposed to the wind. Bog and forest trail can be slippery after rain, so wear trail shoes with good grip and carry a light layer if the forecast is cold.
What to train for
Two climbs and mixed ground make this a strength race more than a speed race.
Once a week, run 6 to 8 x 2 to 3 minutes up a steep hill or trail at hard effort, walking down to recover, and practise power-hiking the steepest pitches.
Do at least one run a week off-road, ideally on muddy or uneven ground, and include relaxed downhill running so the final descent feels fast and safe. A long run of 12 to 15 km on hilly trails builds the endurance to keep running strongly after the second summit.
