Course
The Düsseldorf Marathon course
The marathon starts on Joseph-Beuys-Ufer, right on the Rhine promenade, and heads north along the river toward the Messe and Nordpark, with the first aid station at about 5 km near the Aquazoo. It then turns back toward the center and, after about 13 km, crosses the Oberkasseler Brücke to the left bank for a loop through Oberkassel, where you pass halfway.

Back on the right bank the route runs to the Königsallee and the Zoopark, then on to the Medienhafen, and loops over the Kö once more before the final kilometers. The finish is on the Unteres Rheinwerft in the Altstadt, directly on the river. The organizers describe the course as mostly flat and well suited to personal bests, and the half marathon shares the same start and finish via the Hofgarten, the Kö, the Zoopark and the Medienhafen.

- Weather on race day
- Mid-April in Düsseldorf is usually mild, with average highs around 15 to 16 °C and lows near 6 °C, which is close to ideal for running. April also brings changeable skies, with around 16 days of some rain in the month, so a light rain shell or throwaway layer for the start is a good idea. Wind along the Rhine and over the bridge can feel fresh in the morning. Dress for the running temperature, not the waiting temperature, and you will be comfortable.
What to train for
A flat city course rewards steady, even pacing, so make marathon pace runs the heart of your build: 10 to 16 km at goal pace inside your longer runs will teach you to lock in.
The Oberkasseler Brücke is the one real rise, so a few short hill strides each week will keep it from breaking your rhythm.
Build long runs to 30 to 32 km for the marathon, or 16 to 19 km for the half, and practice drinking from cups at your planned aid stations. With crowds and music along the route, it pays to rehearse a calm start so the energy on Joseph-Beuys-Ufer does not pull you out too fast.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Düsseldorf Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 18, 2027, your taper starts around March 31, 2027.
