- Weather on race day
- December in Santiago is usually dry and sunny, with average lows around 13 °C and highs around 29 °C, and almost no rain. The 7:00 to 8:00 starts are pleasantly cool, but the hillsides warm up fast once the sun is on them, so carry more water than you think you need and protect yourself from the sun.
What to train for
At about 65 m of climbing per kilometre, the 23K is mostly a hiking and climbing race, so build strong power hiking: weekly sessions of 4 to 6 x 5 minutes walking hard up a steep slope, hands on thighs.
The 50-minute cut-off at km 5 means you need to keep moving steadily on the first climb, so practise a sustainable uphill rhythm rather than surging.
Spend time on technical descents to save your quads on the way down from Cerro El Carbón, and do your long runs of 2 to 3 hours on hilly trails carrying the mandatory water and food you will race with.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Trail ParqueMet
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is hilly, so keep one short hill session in the first taper week to keep the climbs familiar. With the race on December 20, 2026, your taper starts around December 8, 2026.
