- Weather on race day
- Ten years of mid-March weather data for Temuco show average highs near 21 °C and lows near 9 °C, with about 10 °C at 8 am when the marathon starts. Mornings are cool and humid and the day warms quickly, and rain falls on about one day in four in this window. Start in a light layer you can shed, and keep drinking on the second lap as the temperature rises.
What to train for
The marathon is two laps of an urban circuit, which makes it a good race for steady, even pacing: plan to run the second lap no slower than the first.
Build long runs to 30 to 32 km for the marathon, with the last 8 to 10 km at goal pace in your final big sessions.
The 5-hour limit works out to about 7:07 per km, so if that is close to your pace, include run-walk practice from the start. Because the race is in March, most of your build happens in the Chilean summer, so do key runs early in the morning.
