    Course

    The Delaware Marathon course

All races start and finish at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park in Wilmington, with the marathon, half and 10K off at 7:00 a.m. The first 13 miles of the marathon tour downtown Wilmington, cross Brandywine Park along the Brandywine River, pass Rodney Square and run near the 100-year-old tower in Rockford Park.

The second half follows the Jack Markell Trail almost to New Castle, turns at New Castle Elementary School and returns to the riverfront. The course tops out at 185 feet, has 13 water stops, and is a USATF certified Boston qualifier where historically 10% to 12% of marathoners have qualified.

    Distances
    5K, 10K, Half marathon, Marathon
    Weather on race day
Mid-April in Wilmington usually brings cool mornings in the upper 40s °F and afternoon highs in the mid 60s °F, close to ideal for distance racing. There is roughly a 30% chance of a wet day, and winds of about 8 mph come mostly from the west, which you may notice on the open trail section. Bring a throwaway layer for the start and you will likely shed it in the first miles.

    What to train for

Plan for two different races in one: a park-and-neighborhood first half with gentle ups and downs around Brandywine and Rockford Parks, then a long, steady trail section where rhythm matters most.

Practice long runs that finish on flat ground at goal pace so the Jack Markell Trail out-and-back feels like a place to settle in.

Because the trail has limited access points, train with the fuel you will carry and rehearse taking it between stops. Marathoners have 7 hours and half marathoners 3.5 hours, so every pace is welcome here.
