    Course

    The Corktown 5K course

The Corktown 5K starts on Michigan Avenue just west of Vernor Highway beside Roosevelt Park and finishes in front of the restored Michigan Central Station. The course runs east along Michigan Avenue toward downtown, loops around past Bagley Street, then works back west through Corktown with an out-and-back on Rosa Parks Boulevard before returning to the station.

It is flat city asphalt through Detroit's oldest neighborhood, with music on the course, plenty of costumes and waves starting from 11 a.m. The race is always the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day, two hours before the Detroit St. Patrick's Parade on the same streets, and it supports the St. Patrick Senior Center.

    Weather on race day
Mid-March in Detroit is usually 35–50 °F by the 11 a.m. start, often grey and breezy, with snow showers or cold rain possible. The late start helps, but keep an extra layer on in the park until your wave goes and warm up properly.

    What to train for

    A flat 5K rewards speed endurance: once a week run 6 x 800 m or 5 x 1,000 m at 5K pace with 2 minutes of jogging, plus a 2 to 3 mile tempo run.

Start in the right wave and settle in by the first mile marker, because the opening stretch of Michigan Avenue is wide and tempting.

If you are doing the Dublin Double, practise a hard one-mile effort followed by about 20 minutes of easy movement and then a full 5K.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Corktown 5K

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
