Course
The Grand Rapids Hot Cider Hustle course
The race starts and finishes at The Meadows at Millennium Park on Maynard Avenue in Walker, just west of downtown Grand Rapids, with the 5K off at 8:30 a.m. and the half marathon and 10K at 8:40 a.m. The half marathon follows paved paths through Millennium Park and the Kent Trails, crossing Maynard Avenue on a pedestrian bridge around mile 2 and the Grand River on the Kent Trails bridge around mile 6, then turns at a U-turn near mile 8.5 and comes back over the river around mile 11.

The first 5 miles are close to flat, and the second half brings a run of short, punchy rises at the bridges and trail ramps, all between about 590 and 665 feet; the official profile adds these up to 1,239 feet of gain, but no single climb is longer than a few minutes. Every distance is on paved streets and paths, there are four water stations with water and sports drink, and the time limit for the half is 3 hours 30 minutes.

- Weather on race day
- Late October in Grand Rapids usually means cool, often damp mornings around 35–45 °F, with afternoon highs in the mid-50s °F and a good chance of cloud, wind or drizzle. Start in a throwaway layer and gloves, use the on-site gear check for dry clothes, and expect to run at or close to your goal pace in these conditions.
What to train for
The bridges and ramps after mile 6 are the real test, so train to hold effort through repeated short rises: once a week, run 8 to 10 x 30 to 45 seconds uphill briskly with a jog back, and do one long run every two weeks on a rolling trail with several ramps in the second half.
Practise running the first 5 flat miles slightly conservatively so you still have legs for the river crossings.
Build the half marathon long run to 11 or 12 miles three weeks out, with the last 3 miles at goal effort. 10K and 5K runners should add a weekly tempo of 15 to 25 minutes.
