Course
The Martian Marathon course
Every distance starts and finishes at Ford Field Park on the Rouge River in west Dearborn. The routes use wide, tree-lined roads through Dearborn's west-side neighborhoods and out along the Rouge River parkland toward Dearborn Heights, with aid stations about every 2 miles.

The organisers describe the course as lightly rolling, and the published route varies by only about 40 feet from its lowest to its highest point, so there is no single hill to plan around. Marathoners run the half marathon loop twice and must reach mile 12.8 by 10:26 a.m. to head out on the second lap (the marathon starts at 7:15 a.m., the 10K and 5K at 8:00 a.m., and the half and 10-mile at 8:45 a.m.).

- Distances
- Marathon, Half marathon, 10 miles, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Mid-April mornings in Dearborn usually sit between the high 30s and low 50s °F at the start, and a breezy or showery day is common at this time of year. It is cool enough to run fast, so dress light, keep a throwaway layer for the start, and drink to schedule even if you do not feel thirsty.
What to train for
A flat, two-lap marathon rewards metronome pacing: practice long runs where the second half is run at the same effort as the first, not faster and not slower.
Build to two or three 18 to 20 mile long runs with the last 6 to 8 miles at goal marathon pace.
Because the course does not change much, the same muscles work all day, so keep one weekly session of strides or short hill repeats to stay springy. Plan your mile 12.8 split with a buffer so the 10:26 a.m. cutoff is never a worry.
Sample week
A sample Martian Marathon training week
A week from the middle of the build, about six weeks out. Your plan sets the real distances and paces from your own fitness and adjusts them every week as you train.
- Monday
- Rest, or 20 minutes of mobility
- Tuesday Key session
- Intervals: 5 × 1 mile at 5K to 10K effort, easy jog between
- Wednesday
- Easy run, 6–7 mi
- Thursday Key session
- Goal-pace run, 10 mi with 6 mi at race pace
- Friday
- Recovery run, 4 mi, or cross-train
- Saturday Key session
- Long run, 16–18 mi, the last 4 mi at race pace
- Sunday
- Easy run, 4 mi, then 6 relaxed strides
Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Martian Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 10, 2027, your taper starts around March 23, 2027.

Martian Marathon training questions
How long should I train for the Martian Marathon?
Most runners give a marathon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
Is the Martian Marathon course hilly?
Flat. Every distance starts and finishes at Ford Field Park on the Rouge River in west Dearborn.
What is the weather usually like at the Martian Marathon?
Mid-April mornings in Dearborn usually sit between the high 30s and low 50s °F at the start, and a breezy or showery day is common at this time of year. It is cool enough to run fast, so dress light, keep a throwaway layer for the start, and drink to schedule even if you do not feel thirsty.
When should I start tapering for the Martian Marathon?
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 10, 2027, your taper starts around March 23, 2027.

No. The plan above builds in your browser with no account, no email, and no card. Make a free account only if you want to keep it, log your runs against it, and have the coach keep adapting it as your training goes.
