Course
The Barcelona Marathon course
The start is on Passeig de Gràcia between Gran Via and Plaça de Catalunya, a move away from the traditional Plaça d'Espanya start while works continue around Montjuïc, and the finish is on Passeig de Lluís Companys beneath the Arc de Triomf. It is a single urban loop through the Eixample grid, past the Sagrada Família, along Avinguda Diagonal, out to the seafront by the Port Olímpic and back through Paral·lel and the old city.

Organisers describe it as urban, flat and fast, and independent course guides put the total climb at only around 100–135 m, mostly long false flats rather than real hills. Waves leave in pace order from 8:30, with pacers from 2:45 to 4:30 and cooling stations late in the race at 30, 35 and 40 km.

- Field
- About 32,000 runners (2026 edition, sold out)
- Weather on race day
- Mid-March in Barcelona is usually 8–16 °C, cool at the start and mild by the finish, with only about four rainy days in the whole month. Humidity sits around 70% and the seafront section can bring a headwind, so start conservatively and keep drinking even if it feels cool.
What to train for
Long straight avenues and gentle false flats reward even pacing more than strength, so make your key sessions long runs of 28–32 km with the last 10–12 km at goal marathon pace.
Practise holding effort, not pace, on a slight drag of 2–3 km, because Diagonal feels longer than it looks in the second half.
With 32,000 runners and paced waves, rehearse settling into your target pace from the first kilometre instead of weaving.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Barcelona Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on March 14, 2027, your taper starts around February 24, 2027.
