Course
The Trieste Spring Run course
The Trieste 21K is a point-to-point half marathon that starts in Sistiana at 10:00 a.m. and follows the coastline of the Gulf of Trieste into the city. It finishes in Piazza Unità d'Italia, the great square that opens straight onto the sea, and the organizers describe the profile as flat and fast.

The Trieste 42K, the only marathon in Friuli Venezia Giulia, runs between the Carso plateau, the coast and the historic center and finishes in the same square. The marathon returned in 2026 for the 30th anniversary of the Bavisela, and the weekend also includes the 7 km Bavisela Family Run.

- Weather on race day
- Early May in Trieste is mild, with average highs around 20 °C and lows around 9 °C. There is roughly a 28 percent chance of a wet day, and the sea is still cool at about 15 °C. Winds in early May come mostly from the east and average around 8 km/h, though the coast can feel breezier. A late-morning start in spring sun warms up quickly along the water, so plan to drink at the aid stations and wear a cap and sunscreen.
What to train for
For the 21K, a flat, fast road means steady pacing pays off: build tempo runs of 8 to 12 km at goal pace and practice a negative split so the run into the city feels strong.
A point-to-point coastal course can bring a headwind or tailwind for long stretches, so include a few sessions where you hold effort rather than pace.
Marathoners should prepare for a more varied route through the Carso and along the coast with long runs of 28 to 32 km on mixed terrain. With a 10:00 a.m. start, practice your breakfast timing and late-morning fueling on long runs.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Trieste Spring Run
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on May 2, 2027, your taper starts around April 20, 2027.
