Course
The Tobacco Road Marathon course
Both races start and finish at Thomas Brooks Park and USA Baseball in western Cary, with a 7:00 a.m. start while it is still dark. The first 2.5 miles follow paved Morrisville Parkway to the American Tobacco Trail, a wide former rail line surfaced with compacted crushed granite, and the marathon spends about 21 miles on it (the half about 8).

The marathon heads north to a turnaround near Scott King Road at about mile 8.5, comes back past Morrisville Parkway at mile 14.5 and runs south to a second turnaround near Olive Chapel Road, while the half goes south to a turnaround just past a short tunnel under US 64. Both return to the park on paved roads, and the organizers describe the courses as flat and fast, with only gradual rail-trail grades and a downhill finish. Aid stations start at mile 2.5 and come about every 2 miles (15 for the marathon, 8 for the half), and the course stays open for seven hours.

- Field
- About 4,000 runners across the marathon and half marathon
- Weather on race day
- The organizers list mid-March averages in Cary of about 40 °F for the low and 64 °F for the high, so start temperatures are usually in the 40s °F, with sunrise about 25 minutes after the gun. It warms quickly once the sun is up, so start in a throwaway layer and plan your fluids for a finish in the 50s or low 60s °F.
What to train for
With most of the race on crushed granite, run a good share of your long runs on a firm unpaved greenway or rail trail so your feet and calves get used to the slightly softer, slower surface.
The grades are long and gentle rather than steep, so practice holding goal effort on gradual inclines and keep something for the downhill finish.
The out and backs mean several 180-degree turnarounds: rehearse tight turns and a smooth return to pace in your workouts. Take fuel every 2 miles on long runs to match the aid spacing, and start a few of them in the early morning dark and cool to mirror race morning.

Taper
Tapering for the Tobacco Road Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on March 14, 2027, your taper starts around February 24, 2027.
