Course
The Outer Banks Marathon course
The marathon and the Southern Fried Half Marathon start and finish at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island, home of The Lost Colony, where the post-race party with barbecue and live music sets up at the entrance. The route runs through the village of Manteo and along the scenic sound side of the island, and long sections use the multiuse path, where runners must stay for safety.

The organizers describe the course as flat and fast, which makes it a favorite for a first marathon or a personal best, and it is a Boston qualifier. The marathon starts at 7:00 a.m. and the half at 7:15, with water, Gatorade and GU every 2 to 2.5 miles and a 6-hour limit for the full. The 5K and 8K run on Saturday on flat roads around the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills.

- Distances
- Marathon, Half marathon, 5 miles, 5K
- Weather on race day
- The organizers give early November averages of about 50 °F to 66 °F, so the 7:00 a.m. start is usually cool and comfortable. Clouds and showers are possible and wind off the sounds is common on the islands, so carry a light layer you can shed and run by effort into any headwind.
What to train for
A flat course invites a fast start, so practice even pacing: run long runs of 18 to 20 miles with the last 6 at goal pace and check that your splits stay within a few seconds of each other.
Add a weekly tempo of 4 to 6 miles at half-marathon effort on flat ground.
The multiuse path is narrow, so practice settling into a steady line with a pace group and running shoulder to shoulder without surging. Train in the wind when you can and rehearse taking a gel at every other aid station.

Taper
Tapering for the Outer Banks Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
