    Course

    The Krispy Kreme Challenge course

The race starts and finishes at the Memorial Belltower on the NC State campus, on Hillsborough Street. Runners head 2.5 miles through historic downtown Raleigh to the Krispy Kreme at Peace and Person Streets, try to eat a dozen original glazed doughnuts (about 2,400 calories), then run 2.5 miles back to the Belltower.

Challengers must eat all twelve and finish the full 5 miles in under one hour, while Casual and No Doughnut runners start alongside them and simply enjoy the run. The streets between campus and downtown roll gently rather than climb, and the organisers publish the exact route closer to race day. It is the number one tradition for NC State students and has raised more than $2.4 million for UNC Children's Hospital.

    Weather on race day
Early February mornings in Raleigh are usually in the 30s to mid-40s °F at the 8 a.m. start, sometimes frosty and occasionally wet. Dress in layers you can tie around your waist after the first mile, and remember that a full stomach makes a cold, quick return leg feel harder.

    What to train for

If you plan to take on the full Challenge, train your stomach: a few runs with a sugary snack eaten at the halfway point teach your gut to keep working while you move.

The return 2.5 miles are the real race, so do tempo runs of 2 to 3 miles after a short warm-up and finish some easy runs with 10 to 15 minutes at steady effort.

Without the doughnuts, 5 miles rewards an even, comfortably hard effort, roughly what you could hold for 40 to 45 minutes.

Tapering for the Krispy Kreme Challenge

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp.
