Course
The Louisiana Marathon course
The marathon and half start at 660 North 4th Street in downtown Baton Rouge, a few blocks from the State Capitol, and finish back downtown. The route heads south via North Boulevard and Park Boulevard to City Park and the University Lakes, loops through the LSU campus around miles 4 to 6, and returns along the lakeshore.

The half turns on Kleinert Avenue around mile 10 and heads home, while the marathon continues east through Mid City's oak-shaded neighborhoods on Clay Cut Road, Goodwood Avenue and Lasalle Avenue before retracing to downtown. It is a flat, USATF-certified road course with water and Powerade at regular stations and a 13:45-per-mile sweep pace for the full.

- Flat
- Distances
- Marathon, Half marathon, 11K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Mid-January in Baton Rouge usually means 40s to low 50s °F at the 7:00 start and highs near 60 °F, but the Gulf can send a warm, humid morning in the 60s or a cold, windy front. Morning fog is common around the lakes. Check the dew point that week and adjust goal pace if it is muggy.
What to train for
A flat course means the same stride for 26.2 miles, so the work is aerobic and muscular endurance rather than hills.
Build long runs to 18 to 20 miles with the final 6 to 10 at goal marathon pace, and add a weekly tempo of 5 to 8 miles.
Hold back through the lakes and LSU in the first 10 miles; the Mid City miles are where even splits pay off. A few long runs on warm, humid days will help if race morning turns muggy.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Louisiana Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on January 17, 2027, your taper starts around December 30, 2026.
