The swim is in the lake: 1,600 yards for the Olympic and 800 yards for the Sprint, guarded by five or more kayaks, paddleboards and lifeguards.

The Olympic bike is 23 miles and the race's published route climbs about 2,300 feet, topping out near 6,600 feet, while the Sprint rides 11.4 miles. The run is a 5K loop with roughly 260 feet of climbing, run twice by the Olympic field. Thin air is the defining feature: expect your breathing to feel harder than the pace suggests, especially on the climbs.

- Race-day conditions
- Mid-September at Shaver Lake usually brings cool mornings around 50–55 °F and dry afternoons in the mid to upper 70s °F, so the 8:00 a.m. Olympic start is crisp and the run warms up quickly in strong mountain sun. Water temperature is posted at least 24 hours before the race: wetsuits are mandatory below 58 °F, recommended from 58 to 65 °F and legal up to 78 °F. At this altitude, drink more than feels necessary and wear sunscreen.
What to train for
The Olympic bike climbs around 2,300 feet in 23 miles, so make climbing your priority: ride 3 to 4 x 8 to 12 minutes at steady threshold on long hills, holding even power rather than chasing speed.
If you live near sea level, aim to arrive a day or two early and start the swim and the climbs a notch easier than usual, because altitude raises your effort at any given pace.
Swim in your wetsuit in cool open water and practice relaxed bilateral breathing after a fast start. Add weekly bricks with a rolling run off the bike so the hilly 5K loop feels routine.

Taper
Tapering for the Shaver Lake Mile High Tri
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is hilly, so keep one short hill session in the first taper week to keep the climbs familiar. With the race on September 12, 2027, your taper starts around September 3, 2027.
