Course
The Bayshore 70.4 course

Read the full course notes
The 56-mile bike is an out-and-back that reaches the San Gabriel River Bike Path after about five traffic lights, then follows the path inland to a turnaround at mile 28 just before the I-10, for 789 feet of climbing in gentle grades and dips under overpasses. The course is not closed to traffic, the path stays open to the public, and the only bike aid station is at the turnaround. The 13.1-mile run follows the flat path along the ocean, with aid every 1.5 miles.

- Race-day conditions
- Alamitos Bay is usually around 58–62 °F in March, so plan on a wetsuit; the race does not publish its own wetsuit rule, and USA Triathlon allows wetsuits for age-groupers up to 78 °F. Mornings in Long Beach are usually 50–60 °F and often grey under the marine layer, warming into the mid 60s by the run, with sea breezes building through the day.
What to train for
With one bike aid station, rehearse carrying all your fuel and two bottles for 56 miles, or plan around the special-needs bag at mile 28.
Ride long, steady sessions on flat bike paths and practice holding the aero position while handling path traffic, turns and underpasses.
Swim in open water in your wetsuit before March so a 60 °F bay feels familiar, and finish weekly bricks with 20 to 40 minutes off the bike at goal half-marathon effort.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Bayshore 70.4
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on March 13, 2027, your taper starts around March 1, 2027.
