    Course

The Cal Tri Lake Perris course

Everything happens inside Lake Perris State Recreation Area, an 8,200-acre reservoir park in western Riverside County, with transition at Lot 9. The swim starts from Swim Beach: 1,640 yards for the Olympic and 400 yards for the sprint.

    Read the full course notes

The bike uses the park roads (Vía Del Lago, Lot 11 Road and Martin Street) on a 9.2-mile loop that the sprint rides once and the Olympic rides three times for 27.5 miles. Each lap reaches its low point around mile 6.5, then climbs about 160 feet back up to Vía Del Lago over the next mile and a half, for roughly 345 feet of climbing per lap and about 1,030 feet over the Olympic ride. The run is an out-and-back along the lakeshore with gentle rollers (3.1 miles for the sprint, two trips for 6 miles in the Olympic), finishing under the finish line arch.

    Race-day conditions
The organizers list an average water temperature of 68 °F, which is wetsuit legal under Cal Tri rules (legal from 65 to 78 °F, recommended from 58 to 64.9 °F, mandatory from 53 to 57.9 °F), so plan to swim in one. Mid-April air temperatures average 49 °F early in the morning and 77 °F in the afternoon, and the inland sun warms the run quickly. Bring a warm layer for setup and drink steadily on the bike.

    What to train for

The climb back to Vía Del Lago on every lap defines the bike: practice 3 x 6 to 8 minutes at Olympic-distance effort on a steady hill, staying smooth and seated rather than surging.

Get a few open-water swims in your wetsuit before race day, because water in the 60s °F feels cold at the start of the season.

Add a weekly brick of 45 to 60 minutes on the bike straight into 15 to 20 minutes running at goal pace. Know the swim cutoffs (3 minutes per 100 yards for the Olympic, 4 for the sprint) and build steady aerobic swim volume if you are close to them.

    Taper

Tapering for the Cal Tri Lake Perris

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on April 11, 2027, your taper starts around April 2, 2027.
