The Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas course
The Strip at Night, and the only race that closes Las Vegas Boulevard. The course is flat and the spectacle is the entire point: an evening start, the Strip lit up, and a field far larger than the distances alone would draw. The weekend is a half marathon, a 10K, and a 5K; there is no marathon.
Weather on race day
An evening start in the Nevada desert means the temperature falls throughout the race rather than rising. Starts in the 50s dropping into the 40s are typical, and the wait in the corral before the start is the coldest part of the night.
What to train for
Evening-race rehearsal more than anything physical. Racing at night with a full day of eating behind you is a different problem from a 7am start, and the way to solve it is to run several goal-pace workouts at the same hour as the race and settle your fuelling for the day beforehand.
