The Rock 'n' Roll Arizona course
Run through Tempe, Scottsdale, and Phoenix on wide, flat desert-city streets, past the red sandstone of Papago Park and finishing at Tempe Beach Park. There is no longer a marathon here: the weekend is a half marathon, a 10K, and a 5K. The January date makes it a common target for anyone building through a northern winter.
Weather on race day
Mid-January in the Valley usually delivers a start in the 40s and a finish in the 60s under clear sky. The sun is stronger than the temperature suggests once you are past two hours.
What to train for
Threshold work and heat-free pacing discipline. With no hills to regulate effort, this is a course where the clock does all the coaching, so goal-pace tempo runs are the highest-value session. If you are training in winter cold, do at least a few runs overdressed to prepare for a warmer race than your build.
