Course
The Arizona Distance Classic course
All three races start at the Roche Tissue Diagnostics campus on East Innovation Park Drive in Oro Valley, just north of Tucson, at about 2,800 feet above sea level. The half marathon tours East Rancho Vistoso Boulevard through saguaro-dotted neighborhoods in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, passing Honey Bee Canyon Park, and the 2025 course map shows about 613 feet of total climbing.

Expect an early dip to around 2,700 feet, a steady climb to nearly 2,950 feet by mile 4, gentle rollers through the middle miles and a descent over the final mile. The quarter marathon heads west and turns at the Honey Bee Canyon trailhead, and the 5K is an out-and-back on Innovation Park Drive and Rancho Vistoso Boulevard with a mostly downhill return. The course stays open for 3.5 hours, which works out to 16:00 per mile for the half.

- Rolling
- Distances
- Half marathon, 11K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Early March around Tucson is usually dry and sunny, with temperatures around 45–55 °F at the 6:30 a.m. half marathon start and afternoon highs in the mid 70s. The desert air is dry and the sun strong at this altitude, so drink before you feel thirsty, wear sunscreen and expect the final miles to feel noticeably warmer than the start.
What to train for
The biggest effort comes early: a climb of about 250 feet that tops out around mile 4.
Do long runs with a sustained climb in their first third, then settle into a steady rhythm on rolling ground, and add a weekly session of 5 to 8 x 2 minutes uphill at half marathon effort.
Include some relaxed downhill running so the final-mile descent feels smooth on your legs. If you live near sea level, the 2,800-foot altitude will make your effort feel a little harder, so pace the first miles by feel.

Taper
Tapering for the Arizona Distance Classic
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on March 7, 2027, your taper starts around February 23, 2027.
