The Mesa Marathon course
A point-to-point course that drops out of the desert north of Mesa and runs downhill into the city, which is why it has become one of the most popular Boston qualifying races in the country. The grade is gentle rather than steep, so it flatters your pace without wrecking your quads the way a genuinely steep downhill course does.
Weather on race day
Early February in the Phoenix area is close to ideal: a cold desert start, often in the 30s or 40s, warming into the 60s by late morning. The start line is genuinely cold and worth over-dressing for.
What to train for
Downhill-specific legs and disciplined pacing. A net downhill course makes goal pace feel effortless for ten miles and then charges interest, so train downhill running deliberately and set your target from what your fitness supports, not from what the first hour will suggest.

How long should I train for the Mesa Marathon?
