Course
The Pine Barrens Triathlon course
Everything is based at the Atsion Lake Recreation Area pavilion on Route 206 in Shamong, in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The swim is in Atsion's freshwater lake from the beach: 1,500 meters for the Olympic and aquabike, a half mile for the Sprint and aquathlon.

Every bike race rides the same flat, fast 24.6-mile single loop on country roads around the lake, so even the Sprint carries an Olympic-length ride. The run is about 90 percent off-road on gravel, pine needles, hard-packed sand and some soft sand through the woods, two loops for the Olympic 10K and one for the Sprint 5K. Duathletes run 5K, ride the loop, then run 5K again.

- Race-day conditions
- Mid-September in the Pine Barrens usually brings temperatures around 58–68 °F at the 8:00 a.m. start, warming to the upper 70s by midday, with lower humidity than midsummer. The lake temperature is posted on race morning: wetsuits are allowed and award-eligible up to 78.0 °F, optional without awards from 78.1 to 83.9 °F, banned at 84.0 °F and above, and required at 60.8 °F or below. The woods shade much of the run, but open sandy stretches can feel warm in full sun.
What to train for
Prepare the run for sand: run at least once a week on trail, gravel or a beach, and practice shortening your stride and keeping a quick cadence through soft patches.
The 24.6-mile bike is flat with nowhere to coast, so ride 75 to 90 minutes at a steady aero effort and get used to holding your position for long stretches.
When you can, run your bricks straight off the bike onto an unpaved path. Sprint racers in particular should train the bike like Olympic athletes, because the ride makes up most of their race time.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Pine Barrens Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 11, 2027, your taper starts around September 2, 2027.
