The LBI Triathlon course
Race central is Bayview Park at 6805 Long Beach Boulevard in Brant Beach, on the bay side of Long Beach Island. The 1/4-mile swim is in the sheltered bay at Bayview Beach Park.
Read the full course notes
The 10.75-mile bike is a fast, flat three-loop course on island roads toward Beach Haven, with wide five-lane turns. The 3-mile run is flat as well, going out and back on Bayview Avenue and looping past the water tower before a finish on the boardwalk. Duathletes run 1.5 miles first, ride the same three loops and finish with the 3-mile run, and with no hills anywhere the island breeze is the main variable.

- Race-day conditions
- Mid-September on Long Beach Island is usually pleasant, with temperatures around 62–70 °F at the 7:20 a.m. start and highs in the mid 70s, though a sea breeze or stronger wind across the island is common. Bay water is often still in the 70s °F in September, and the race-morning reading decides wetsuits: allowed and award-eligible up to 78.0 °F, optional without awards from 78.1 to 83.9 °F, with buoyancy shorts permitted at any temperature. Wind matters most on the exposed bike loops, so stay low and patient into any headwind.
What to train for
This is a short, flat, fast race, so speed matters more than endurance: do weekly bike intervals such as 4 x 5 minutes hard with 2 minutes easy, and practice holding an aero position into a headwind.
Three loops mean several turnarounds, so rehearse braking late, turning tight and accelerating cleanly out of the turn.
Build 15 to 20 minute brick runs at 5K effort straight off the bike. Include a few open-water swims with buoy turns so the short, fast 1/4 mile feels smooth.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the LBI Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 19, 2027, your taper starts around September 10, 2027.
