    • Half 1.2 mi swim, 54 mi bike, 13.1 mi run

    Course

    The Patriot Half course

Everything is based at Cathedral Camp in East Freetown, on the shore of Long Pond, the largest freshwater body in Massachusetts, with racing from 7:00 AM. The 1.2-mile swim is one counterclockwise rectangle in the pond.

    Read the full course notes

The 54-mile bike heads through Lakeville and over the Pocksha Pond Causeway, then rides a Middleborough and Rochester loop twice, for about 1,430 feet of climbing on mostly flat roads with some rolling hills. The 13.1-mile run is a single loop past farms and lakes, generally flat with one short, steep hill near mile 12.5, and the last quarter mile is on the camp grounds. 2027 is the race's 21st year, and it has won Best Small Race three times in the Triathlete's Choice Awards.

    Race-day conditions
June in nearby New Bedford averages a high of 75 °F and a low of 58 °F, so the swim start is cool and the run can warm up. Recent race-day water temperatures in Long Pond have ranged from 68 °F to 76 °F, and wetsuits have been allowed every year so far. Expect about 8 days with rain in June and around 5 muggy days, so drink steadily on the bike and wear sunscreen for the open run.

    What to train for

The bike is mostly flat, so practise holding an aero position at steady half-distance effort for 2 to 3 hours.

Build a weekly brick that runs straight off the bike, and finish some long runs with a short, hard hill to rehearse the climb near mile 12.5.

Do several open-water swims, sighting on buoys around a rectangular loop. Know the cutoffs: swim done by 9:00 AM, bike and T2 by 12:45 PM, and 8 hours 30 minutes to finish.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Patriot Half

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on June 12, 2027, your taper starts around June 3, 2027.
