    Course

    The Paderborner Osterlauf course

Start and finish are on Heierswall, right beside the Sportzentrum Maspernplatz in the center of Paderborn. The whole route is on asphalt roads and forms a loop: the 5 km and 10 km races run it once and the half marathon runs it twice.

The course is flat, and the only notable rise comes about 1 km into each lap, where you cross the Nordbrücke over the railway tracks. There are three refreshment points on the loop plus food at the finish, and all distances are officially measured to IAAF/AIMS standards. The half marathon starts at 2:30 p.m. on Holy Saturday, with the finish closing at 5:15 p.m.

    Weather on race day
Late March in Paderborn is cool, with average highs around 9 °C and lows around 2 °C. March brings about 63 mm of rain spread over roughly 8 days, so pack a light rain jacket for the wait before your start. The afternoon start means the warmest part of the day, which suits many runners well in early spring. Dress in layers you can drop at the clothing depot and plan a warm top for after the finish.

    What to train for

A flat, two-lap course rewards even pacing, so practice tempo runs of 6 to 10 km at goal half marathon pace and aim for a second lap that matches the first.

Add a few short bridge or overpass repeats so the Nordbrücke climb on each lap feels routine rather than a pace breaker.

Because the half starts in the afternoon, rehearse a late long run with a normal breakfast and a light lunch to learn what sits well. Start blocks are assigned from the finish time you enter, so pick an honest goal and you will run with people at your pace from the gun.
