The OKC Memorial Marathon course
A memorial race for the 1995 bombing, run out of the memorial site through downtown, the Oklahoma City neighbourhoods, and around Lake Hefner. The 168 seconds of silence before the start sets the tone for the day. The course rolls gently, and the exposed stretch by the lake is where wind does its work.
Weather on race day
Late April in Oklahoma is warm and windy more often than not. Starts in the 50s or 60s, finishes that can push well past 70, and a steady prairie wind are all typical.
What to train for
Heat and wind preparation, and a goal set with both in mind. Do some of your build in the warmest part of the day, practise taking fluid at every station, and expect the exposed lake miles to cost more than the profile suggests.
