- Distances
- Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Late September around Memphis brings average highs near 80 °F and lows near 60 °F, with muggy days becoming much less frequent as the month goes on. The 6:30 a.m. start is close to the coolest part of the day, so most of the half is run before the heat builds, but humidity can still be noticeable. Rain falls on only about one day in five at this time of year.
What to train for
Late September in West Tennessee can still be warm and humid, so train through the summer with easy runs early in the day and practice drinking on the move.
Build tempo runs of 4 to 6 miles at half marathon effort and long runs up to 11 or 12 miles, starting some of them at dawn to rehearse the 6:30 a.m. start.
Because the race starts early, practice your pre-race breakfast and warm-up timing on long-run mornings. A steady first half and a confident push over the last 3 miles is a great plan here.
