    Course

    The Music & Miles course

Music and Miles starts and finishes at Citizens Bank Stadium, the Elizabethton High School football stadium on Jason Witten Way. The organizers call the USATF certified course relatively flat and smooth, with most of it on the Tweetsie Trail and music along the way.

Relay exchanges sit just past mile 3 at Crossroad Craftworks, around mile 5.5 on Blue Ridge Drive after a short loop of Blue Ridge, Veterans Memorial Parkway, Hatcher Lane and the Tweetsie Trail, and just before mile 9 back at the Tweetsie Trail by the stadium. There are six hydration stations, one at each exchange plus extra stops on the course, and the event window runs from the 7:30 a.m. start until just after noon, so walkers are welcome too.

    Weather on race day
Late April in Elizabethton is mild: 1991 to 2020 normals give an average high of 68 °F and a low of 42 °F for the month. Expect a cool start at 7:30 a.m. that warms through the morning. Spring showers are common, with about 3.5 inches of rain in an average April, so pack a light layer you can toss and a dry change for after.

    What to train for

A flat, smooth course rewards even pacing, so practice long runs where the last 3 miles match the first.

Build to 10 to 12 miles and include goal-pace segments of 3 to 5 miles inside them.

Most of the race is on a trail surface, so run some of your long runs on a greenway or packed trail near you. If you are new to the half, walk breaks are a smart option on a course with a generous window.

    Taper

Tapering for the Music & Miles

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
