Course
The Millerton Madness course
Everything starts from Meadow Campground on the Madera side of Millerton Lake, with the swim, transition and finish clustered around the boat launch. The 400-yard swim starts in the water, loops the buoys and comes back to the boat ramp, a short, beginner-friendly distance.

The 5.4-mile bike is an out-and-back with rolling hills, heading north towards the park entrance and turning at the toll booth by the Millerton Lake SRA sign. The 2.2-mile run is all asphalt, out about 1.1 miles along the park road to a crosswalk turnaround and back, gaining only about 90 feet. A 5K run starts at 7:15 a.m., ahead of the 7:30 a.m. triathlon, so the early start beats the worst of the summer heat.

- Race-day conditions
- By late August the lake is warm: the race's most recent water update listed 83 °F, so wetsuits are not needed, and above 78 °F they are allowed only without eligibility for awards or USA Triathlon ranking points. That same update forecast about 75 °F at the 7:30 a.m. start and 83 °F by 9:30 a.m., so this is a hot, dry morning race. Start well hydrated and keep a bottle on the bike even for a short ride.
What to train for
This is a short, sharp race, so train for speed rather than endurance: swim 8 to 10 x 50 yards fast with short rest, and practice starting in the water and climbing a boat ramp.
On the bike, ride rolling routes with 4 to 6 x 3 minutes hard on the climbs, since the out-and-back rewards pushing the rises and recovering on the descents.
Do short bricks of 20 minutes on the bike into 10 to 15 minutes at 5K effort, and include a couple in the heat of the morning so race day feels familiar. Rehearse quick transitions: with a race this short, a minute saved in T1 and T2 is a big chunk of your time.

Taper
Tapering for the Millerton Madness
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on August 22, 2027, your taper starts around August 13, 2027.
