It is a certified Boston-qualifying marathon with minimal elevation gain, built for personal records. Aid is generous: 20 stations on the marathon and 8 on the half, with water and Powerade at each (water only at the first), energy gel at five marathon stations and at mile 7 of the half. The marathon has a 15-minute-per-mile pace requirement and the half 17 minutes per mile, and live music and a downtown finish festival keep the energy high.

- Marathon, Half marathon, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Late September in southern Indiana usually brings start temperatures of about 50–62 °F, warming toward the upper 70s by midday, with moderate humidity. Warm years happen, so plan to ease your goal pace slightly if the start is above 60 °F.
What to train for
Flat and fast means pacing discipline: build long runs to 20 miles with the last 6 to 8 at goal pace and add a weekly tempo of 5 to 7 miles.
Part of the course runs on park trails, so include some runs on paved paths and practice holding pace through turns and surface changes.
Rehearse drinking Powerade and taking gels on the move, since aid comes often and you can lean on it. Newer marathoners should be comfortable well inside the 15-minute-per-mile limit before race day.

Taper
Tapering for the Mill Race Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 25, 2027, your taper starts around September 7, 2027.
