    Course

    The Fort4Fitness Half Marathon course

All three races (half marathon, 10K and 4 mile) start at 8:00 a.m. just outside the main entrance of Parkview Field, the downtown Fort Wayne ballpark, and finish with a run through the stadium to the line at home plate. The USATF-certified half marathon winds through historic neighborhoods and past landmark churches, using Fairfield Avenue and the Foster Park and South Wayne areas, with neighborhood cheer groups and live music along the way.

Expect mostly flat, paved city streets with only gentle grade changes. There are seven water stations on the half and three on the 10K. Everyone must be off the course by noon, which gives the half four hours.

    Weather on race day
Late September in Fort Wayne is usually cool at the start, around 50–60 °F, warming into the 70s by late morning. Humidity is moderate and rain is possible, so dress for the start temperature and bring a throwaway layer for the wait in the corrals.

    What to train for

A flat, certified course is a good place to chase a half marathon best, so center your plan on goal-pace work: tempo runs of 4 to 6 miles and long runs of 10 to 13 miles with the final 3 to 4 at goal pace.

Add a weekly session of 5 to 6 x 1 mile at 10K pace to build speed you can hold.

City courses have plenty of turns, so practice running the tangents and holding rhythm through corners. Schedule some long runs at 8:00 a.m. to rehearse breakfast and fueling.

    Taper

Tapering for the Fort4Fitness Half Marathon

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 25, 2027, your taper starts around September 13, 2027.

    Fort4Fitness Half Marathon training questions

How long should I train for the Fort4Fitness Half Marathon?

Most runners give a half marathon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Is the Fort4Fitness Half Marathon course hilly?

Flat. All three races (half marathon, 10K and 4 mile) start at 8:00 a.m. just outside the main entrance of Parkview Field, the downtown Fort Wayne ballpark, and finish with a run through the stadium to the line at home plate.

What is the weather usually like at the Fort4Fitness Half Marathon?

Late September in Fort Wayne is usually cool at the start, around 50–60 °F, warming into the 70s by late morning. Humidity is moderate and rain is possible, so dress for the start temperature and bring a throwaway layer for the wait in the corrals.

When should I start tapering for the Fort4Fitness Half Marathon?

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 25, 2027, your taper starts around September 13, 2027.
