    Course

    The Linz Marathon course

The 25th Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon starts at 9:30 on the voest motorway bridge over the Danube and finishes on the Hauptplatz, the city's main square in the centre of Linz. The marathon and half marathon share that start and finish, and both courses are measured to IAAF rules by an AIMS course measurer.

The organizers describe it as a fast running course, and the full event weekend also includes a marathon relay for four runners, a quarter marathon and a 5 km through the city centre. The race has been held since 2002, and in 2026 it drew 21,401 participants.

    Distances
    5K, Half marathon, Marathon
    Weather on race day
Mid-April in Linz averages a high of about 15 °C and a low of about 5 °C, cool and comfortable for a spring marathon. April has around 8 wet days, so pack a light jacket for the start in case of showers. Winds come mostly from the west, and the bridge over the Danube can feel exposed, so a throwaway layer helps while you wait.

    What to train for

A fast, measured course rewards even pacing, so rehearse goal pace in long blocks: 3 x 5 km for the half, or 2 x 10 km within a long run for the marathon.

The start on the bridge is wide and exciting, so practise settling into your pace in the first kilometre rather than chasing the crowd.

Build long runs up to 30 to 32 km for the marathon and practise fuelling every 30 to 40 minutes. If you are running the relay or quarter marathon, add some faster 1 km repeats to sharpen your speed.
