Course
The Wörthersee Halbmarathon course
The half marathon is point-to-point along the north shore of the Wörthersee: it starts on the Seecorso in Velden in front of the Schlosshotel and finishes in the Kärnten Läuft Running City at the Metnitzstrand in Klagenfurt. The route runs east through Techelsberg, along the Pörtschach lakeside promenade (about km 9), past Pritschitz and through Krumpendorf to the finish, with an entertainment mile every kilometre.

It is a fast course: Geoffrey Ronoh ran 59:45 here in 2014, the first sub-hour half in Austria, and the 2026 edition doubled as the Austrian championships. The AK Viertelmarathon (10.55 km) starts on the Pörtschach promenade at 8:00 and shares the second half of the route, an hour before the half sets off at 9:00. Your bib works as a free ÖBB train ticket from Klagenfurt West to the start, and bags are carried to the finish.
- Distances
- Half marathon, 11K
- Field
- About 10,000 runners across all Kärnten Läuft events in 2026
- Weather on race day
- Late August in Klagenfurt usually means mornings around 14–18 °C climbing to about 25 °C by midday, and the event history recalls a 2023 'heat battle', so the 9:00 start can turn warm on the lakeside. There are aid stations at the start, km 4, 9, 13.5 (water only), 15, 19 and the finish; drink early and make the most of the cooling and refreshment miles at Pritschitz and the Kropfitschbad.
What to train for
A point-to-point course with a 59:45 record rewards even pacing, so do tempo runs of 8 to 12 km at half marathon pace and long runs of 18 to 22 km with the second half at goal pace.
Because you travel to Velden by train and leave your bag early (drop closes at 8:45), practise a race-morning routine with an early breakfast and a 15-minute jog warm-up.
Late-summer heat is the main variable: schedule some long runs in the warmth of the day and practise drinking at every station, every 4 to 5 km.
