Road, mountain, gravel, hybrid and e-bikes are all allowed, and you can race solo or as a team of two or three, with each teammate taking one leg. The start is at 7:00 a.m. and the course closes at 11:00 a.m., so you have four hours to finish. Like the rest of the Elevation Culture Race Series it is cupless, so you carry your own hydration.

    Race-day conditions
October near Lake Hodges is usually dry and sunny, with normal lows in the upper 50s °F and afternoon highs around 80 °F at nearby Escondido. The 7:00 a.m. start keeps most of the race in the cooler morning hours, but carry enough fluid for the ride and the final run as the sun climbs.

    What to train for

The key skill is running well off the bike: do a weekly brick, riding 45 to 60 minutes and then running 15 to 20 minutes straight away, on trail if you can.

Train on the bike you will race and ride it on dirt and gravel, practicing steady climbing in an easy gear and smooth descending.

Keep the opening 10K relaxed, around your half marathon effort, so you still have legs for the closing 5K. Rehearse both transitions with your bottle mounted and your kit laid out the way you will set it on race day.
