The Lago Maggiore Marathon course
The marathon is a point-to-point run along the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore, starting on the Arona lakefront at 09:00 and finishing in Verbania Pallanza. The route heads north through Meina, Lesa, Belgirate and Stresa (where the half marathon finishes), then Baveno and Feriolo, rounds the Borromean Gulf through Fondotoce and finishes via Suna on the Pallanza lakefront.

The official course profile is essentially flat from start to finish, with the lake on your right for almost the whole way. The 33 km also starts in Arona at 09:30 and finishes in Pallanza, and the 10 km runs from Fondotoce (Camping Isolino) to Pallanza. Aid stations come roughly every 5 km (km 5.8, 10, 15.2, 21.2, 26.2, 31.1, 36.3 and 39.2), pacers cover 3:00 to 5:00 in 15-minute steps, and the marathon time limit is 5 hours 30 minutes.

What to train for
A flat, point-to-point lakeside course rewards even pacing, so build long runs to 32–35 km with the final 10–15 km at marathon pace on flat roads.
Run a weekly tempo of 8–12 km at marathon pace to make the rhythm automatic, since there are no hills to break up the effort.
Practise taking drinks every 5 km in cool weather, when it is easy to under-drink, and include a few long runs that start early with a cold, slow first kilometre.

Taper
Tapering for the Lago Maggiore Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
