The Derby Festival miniMarathon course

The half, universally called the miniMarathon, is one of the largest in the country and the centrepiece of the Derby Festival. Both distances run through Churchill Downs, which is the moment everyone comes for. Away from the track the course rolls gently through downtown Louisville, and the full marathon adds Louisville's South End, a stretch along Southern Parkway, and the climbing through Iroquois Park. It is run on a Saturday.

Weather on race day

Late April in Louisville can be perfect or muggy, and the difference is usually humidity rather than temperature. Starts in the 50s warming through the 60s are typical, with a real chance of a warm, sticky morning.

What to train for

Crowd-adjusted pacing and heat tolerance. This is a big field on city streets, so the first two miles will be slower than you planned and the temptation is to spend the next four making them up. Train goal pace off a controlled start, and get some warm-weather running in during the build rather than meeting humidity for the first time on race day.
