Course
The Kansas City Marathon course
Run out of downtown past Union Station and the Nelson-Atkins Museum, along the tree-lined boulevards and through the neighbourhoods south of the city. Kansas City is considerably hillier than its reputation suggests and this course finds the hills honestly: the profile is a series of medium climbs with very little sustained flat between them.

What to train for
Strength endurance on rolling terrain.
The specific demand is arriving at each climb without having overspent on the last one, so run long efforts on hilly routes and keep the pace honest on the descents rather than hammering them.

Taper
Tapering for the Kansas City Marathon
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is hilly, so keep one short hill session in the first taper week to keep the climbs familiar.
