Course
The IRONMAN Calella-Barcelona course
Calella, a seaside town in the Maresme about 50 km up the coast from Barcelona, hosts one of Europe's fastest full-distance courses, where winners have gone under eight hours. The day opens with a single-lap 3.8 km sunrise swim from Calella beach, heading out from the shore and curving back to the sand, with T1 and T2 on the same artificial-grass football field (Camp de Mar) right by the beach.

The 180.2 km bike is two laps along the coast road between Calella and Badalona with only 750 m of climbing, so it is mostly flat with gentle rollers and long stretches where aero position pays off. The marathon is three laps between Calella and Pineda de Mar, mixing seafront and town sections chosen for crowd support and a faster surface, and finishes on the beach.

- Race-day conditions
- Early October on the Maresme coast usually brings air temperatures of roughly 14–27 °C, with sun and some humidity. IRONMAN lists an average water temperature of 23 °C (22–24 °C over recent editions), close to the wetsuit cutoff of 24.5 °C, so train for both a wetsuit and a non-wetsuit swim. A warm afternoon run makes sodium and fluid planning essential.
What to train for
Flat and fast means hours in the aero position: build long rides of 5–6 hours mostly on your aerobars, including 2 × 60 minutes at goal Ironman power, and fine-tune your bike fit for comfort over 180 km.
Because the water sits near the wetsuit cutoff, do some long swims without a wetsuit (or in a swimskin) so a non-wetsuit day does not catch you out.
The three-lap run rewards patience: practise brick runs at a pace that feels too easy for the first 10 km, and rehearse drinking and cooling at every aid station in warm conditions.

Taper
Tapering for the IRONMAN Calella-Barcelona
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
