Course
The Holyoke St. Patrick's Road Race course
The 10K starts at 1 p.m. at Maple and Lyman Streets in downtown Holyoke, with runners released in waves by bib color, and finishes back downtown. From the start the route runs out Maple and South Streets, then climbs onto Northampton Street, Westfield Road, Homestead Avenue and Cherry Street before turning down Beech Street and Hampden Street toward the finish.
Read the full course notes
Most of the climbing comes in the first half, as the course rises a few hundred feet from the downtown flats near the Connecticut River to the higher ground around Homestead Avenue, and the payback is a fast descent home on Beech Street. The organizers call it "one of the most challenging (and fun)" 10Ks in the region, and spectators line the whole route on the eve of the city's St. Patrick's Parade. The 2027 race is the 50th annual running.

- 10K
- Field
- More than 6,000 runners
- Weather on race day
- Late March in the Pioneer Valley is usually still cool: by the 1 p.m. start temperatures typically sit between the upper 30s and about 50°F, and wind, cold rain or even a snow shower are all possible. Dress in layers you can shed before the gun, and wear gloves if the day is raw. The afternoon start means you need a planned breakfast and a light lunch rather than racing on an empty stomach.
What to train for
This course rewards strength on the climbs and the confidence to run hard downhill.
Once a week, run 6–8 × 90-second hill repeats at 10K effort with a jog back down, and make one long run of 8–10 miles on a hilly route.
Practise a few fast downhill strides so the drop down Beech Street feels like free speed rather than a pounding. Pace the first half by effort, not by watch: hold back on the climbs and the closing miles can be your fastest.
