    Course

    The Run to Remember course

Both races start at 7:00 a.m. on Seaport Boulevard near the Renaissance Boston Seaport hotel, and the half and the 5 Miler share a downtown loop past the Old State House, Government Center, Faneuil Hall, Boston Common, the Theatre District and Post Office Square. About 2 miles in, at Charles Circle on Cambridge Street, half marathoners keep right over the Longfellow Bridge into Cambridge and run along the Charles River past MIT and Harvard with the skyline as a backdrop, while 5 Milers turn left onto Charles Street toward the Common.

The half has 7 aid stations with water and Gatorade, dedicated pacers and a 3 hour time limit, with a sag bus at mile 11. The organizers note the 5 Miler measured about 5.2 miles because of construction, so check the latest map before race day.

    Distances
    Half marathon, 5 miles
    Weather on race day
Late May in Boston is usually mild for running: average highs reach about 70 °F by the end of the month, with lows in the mid 50s °F. At the 7:00 a.m. start it is typically in the 50s °F, comfortable for most runners, though sun along the open river can warm things up later in the morning. Rain falls on roughly one day in three, and winds are mostly light from the west.

    What to train for

This is a big, lively city half with a pacing team, so practice locking into an even goal pace on long runs and tempo runs of 4 to 6 miles.

The opening downtown miles are crowded, so rehearse a calm, relaxed first mile and save your push for the long riverside stretch.

Long runs building to 11 or 12 miles will set you up for a strong finish back in the Seaport.
