    Course

    The Hartford Marathon course

Starts on Capitol Avenue in front of the Connecticut State Capitol and finishes just past the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch in Bushnell Park. The first eight miles, shared with the half, run through the tree-lined neighborhoods of West Hartford and briefly through Elizabeth Park.

The marathon then crosses the Connecticut River on the Founders Bridge, follows the East Hartford side of the river and heads out on quiet rural roads in South Windsor before returning to Hartford. The profile is mostly gentle: some rolling ground in West Hartford early, then flatter miles along the river. Running in under the arch is one of the great finishes in New England racing.

    Weather on race day
Mid-October in Hartford usually brings a start in the 40s to low 50s °F and highs in the low 60s °F (Bradley Airport normals of about 42 °F and 64 °F). Crisp, dry mornings are common, though some years bring rain or wind along the river. It is good marathon weather: start even and let the flatter river miles carry you.

    What to train for

The race splits naturally in two: rolling neighborhood miles early, then longer, flatter and quieter roads along the river and through South Windsor.

Train for the second half with long runs that finish with 6 to 8 miles at goal pace, ideally on a flat, low-traffic route where you have to motivate yourself.

Keep one weekly run of 40 to 60 minutes on rolling hills for the early miles. Practice fueling every 30 to 40 minutes so the rural stretch never feels long.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Hartford Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.
