Course
The Hampton Half course
Both races start together at 10:00 a.m. in Hampton Beach, and the half winds through seaside neighborhoods, quiet back roads and open marshland before the final 3 miles run flat along Route 1A beside the Atlantic. The whole course has only about 130 feet of elevation gain, with a few gentle rolling stretches early and a flat oceanfront finish built for a strong closing 5K.
Read the full course notes
The 5K shares 2.5 miles of the half course along the ocean. The course is certified, spectators can see runners at the start, along Ocean Boulevard and at the finish, and pacers cover goals from 1:30 to 3:30. Afterwards you warm up indoors at the Ashworth by the Sea with hot soup.
- Terrain
- Flat
- Distances
- Half marathon, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Early March on the New Hampshire seacoast is usually cold, around 30–45 °F at the 10:00 a.m. start, and wind off the ocean can make it feel colder, especially on the exposed final miles along Route 1A. Snow or freezing rain is possible, so train in winter kit, plan layers you can shed, and pace by effort if there is a headwind.
What to train for
With just 130 feet of gain, this is a half marathon PR course, so focus on sustained pace work: tempo runs of 4 to 6 miles at half marathon effort and intervals such as 3 x 2 miles at goal pace with 3 minutes easy.
Finish some long runs of 10 to 13 miles with the last 3 miles faster, to mirror the flat oceanfront stretch on Route 1A.
Your build falls in a New England winter, so do key sessions outside in the cold when it is safe, use a treadmill on icy days, and rehearse a late-morning race routine for the 10:00 a.m. start.

- Friday
- Recovery run, 4 mi, or cross-train

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Hampton Half
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on March 7, 2027, your taper starts around February 23, 2027.

Hampton Half training questions
How long should I train for the Hampton Half?
Most runners give a half marathon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
Is the Hampton Half course hilly?
Flat. Both races start together at 10:00 a.m. in Hampton Beach, and the half winds through seaside neighborhoods, quiet back roads and open marshland before the final 3 miles run flat along Route 1A beside the Atlantic.
What is the weather usually like at the Hampton Half?

Snow or freezing rain is possible, so train in winter kit, plan layers you can shed, and pace by effort if there is a headwind.
When should I start tapering for the Hampton Half?
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on March 7, 2027, your taper starts around February 23, 2027.
