The Fredericton Marathon course
The marathon starts at 7:00 a.m. on St. John Street at Aberdeen, beside Queen Square, and finishes in Queen Square Park in downtown Fredericton.

It is two different loops: the first crosses the Saint John River on the Westmorland Street Bridge and runs out and back on the Northside Trail, returning over the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge; the second climbs gently from the river to the Crosstown and Lincoln trails, heads out the Gibson Trail toward Marysville and turns past Chase's Christmas Tree Farm before coming home on the Nashwaak Trail. Much of the race is on the city's riverside trail network, several of them former rail lines, so the grades stay gentle and the scenery is wooded and quiet. It is a certified course that Canadian Running magazine named its best Boston qualifier. Expect small crowds outside downtown and a friendly, local feel throughout.

- Weather on race day
- Early May in Fredericton is usually cool: a 7:00 a.m. start often sits around 3–10 °C, and average afternoon highs are near 17 °C. Rain is common at this time of year (2026 was run in a downpour), so pack a throwaway layer and a plan for wet shoes.
What to train for
Gentle grades and cool air make this a race for an even-paced goal time, so build long runs to 30–35 km with the last 10 km at marathon pace.
Two loops means you pass the finish area at halfway: rehearse the mental side by doing long runs that loop past home or your car without stopping.
Some of the course is on trail paths, so run part of your long runs on firm trail or path surfaces and practise taking fluids on narrower stretches.

Taper
Tapering for the Fredericton Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on May 9, 2027, your taper starts around April 21, 2027.
