    Course

    The Circuito CAIXA Brasília course

The start and finish sit on the Esplanada dos Ministérios beside the Catedral Metropolitana, with the main start at 7:00. The route is a long, wide loop down the Esplanada past the Palácio Itamaraty and the Congresso Nacional, out past the Palácio do Planalto to a turnaround, and back up the other side past the Palácio da Justiça.

The 10 km runs the loop twice and the 5 km once, so you see Niemeyer's buildings from both sides. The roads are smooth, broad avenues with no real hills, but the Esplanada drops gently towards the Congress, so the outward leg runs slightly downhill and the return is a long, gradual rise. Brasília sits at about 1,100 m, which makes hard efforts feel a little tougher than at sea level.

    Weather on race day
January is the rainy season in Brasília: expect roughly 19–22 °C at the 7:00 start, high humidity, and a real chance of rain, although storms usually arrive later in the day. The altitude and humidity both raise your sweat rate, so start hydrated and use the water stations.

    What to train for

Practise the shape of the race: run the first half relaxed on the slight downhill, then hold your rhythm up the long, gentle return, especially on the second lap of the 10 km.

Weekly sessions of 5 to 6 × 1 km at 10 km pace and a 20 to 25 minute tempo build the strength to hold pace on that rise.

If you live at sea level, allow for the altitude and start a few seconds per kilometre slower than your flat-course target.

Tapering for the Circuito CAIXA Brasília

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp.
