Course
The Porto Alegre Marathon course
Brazil's oldest marathon, organised by the Clube dos Corredores de Porto Alegre, bills its 42.195 km as the flattest and fastest in the country. In 2026 the race started and finished at BarraShoppingSul on Avenida Diário de Notícias in Cristal, then ran north along the Orla do Guaíba on Avenida Edvaldo Pereira Paiva into the Centro Histórico by Avenida Mauá and the Mercado Público, before looping back through Azenha and Praia de Belas to the waterfront.

The 2026 route was billed as the flattest in the race's history, on wide asphalt avenues with long views over the Guaíba. The marathon starts at 6:00 on Sunday, the half runs on the Saturday, and the 2027 start area is still to be confirmed.

- Weather on race day
- Early June in Porto Alegre is usually cool and damp, with about 8–14 °C at the 6:00 start, high humidity and the chance of fog or drizzle off the Guaíba. These are excellent conditions for a fast time; just watch for the wind on the open waterfront stretches and dress for the first cold half hour.
What to train for
A flat course in cool air rewards a well-judged goal pace: do long runs of 28 to 34 km with blocks of 8 to 15 km at marathon pace, and a weekly tempo or threshold session.
Because there is no terrain to break up the effort, practise holding even splits for 90 minutes or more on a flat loop.
Run some sessions into a headwind so a breezy stretch along the Guaíba does not throw your pacing.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Porto Alegre Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on June 6, 2027, your taper starts around May 19, 2027.
