Course
The Chattanooga Waterfront Tri course
The Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon has been a summer tradition for 45 years, and in 2027 it moves to a new home at Coolidge Park on the North Shore. The swim is a point-to-point, downriver swim in the Tennessee River with a time-trial start that sends an athlete in about every 3 seconds: the sprint covers about 330 yards (300 meters) and the Olympic about 1,200 yards (1.1 kilometers), and both finish just past the Market Street Bridge ramp.

The bike opens with a small steady climb out of transition and then runs fast and flat on Riverside Drive and Amnicola Highway, using the inside lanes separated from traffic by cones; the sprint rides about 13.7 miles and the Olympic rides two loops for about 24.8 miles. The run is flat, mostly on the Riverwalk with a short section of Riverfront Parkway, at 3.1 miles for the sprint and two loops for 6.2 miles in the Olympic, and runners stay left throughout.

- Race-day conditions
- Late June in Chattanooga is hot and humid: the race page lists an average air temperature of 77 °F, and WeatherSpark shows average highs of 87 to 88 °F with a growing chance of muggy days. The organizers list an average water temperature of 83 °F, which under USAT rules means wetsuits are allowed only without award eligibility (78.1 to 84 °F) and are prohibited above 84 °F, so plan to swim without one. An early start helps, but bring plenty of fluids and electrolytes for the bike and run.
What to train for
The downriver swim rewards confident open-water skills, so practice sighting every 6 to 8 strokes and get a few river or lake swims in before race day.
With a fast, flat bike, steady power matters more than climbing, so ride 2 to 3 x 10 to 15 minutes at race effort in an aero position.
Add a weekly brick of 30 to 60 minutes on the bike straight into 10 to 20 minutes of running at goal pace. If this is your first triathlon, the organizer's Concierge program is designed to help newcomers get started.

Taper
Tapering for the Chattanooga Waterfront Tri
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on June 27, 2027, your taper starts around June 18, 2027.
